Over the past 8 months, a need had grown at Circle to ship our single, unified app in many flavors to serve our enterprise partners. To back up a little bit, at the close of 2017 we had a new design system (dubbed Radius) that we were ready to get our app teams building. The effort to get T-Mobile launched starved off most of our internal resources and we came out at the end of that with a need to be able to skin the T-Mobile app for our own new mobile-first version, as well as for Sky UK, one of our partners.
With these needs in mind I drove an effort to begin adopting Material Theme standards as a way to align the deliverables, primitives, and flows of our current app UI to create a more sustainable way to deliver our design at scale for multiple partners, across iOS and Android.
The result is a system that utilizes Google's Material plugin for Sketch with multiple libraries versioned in Abstract that can be swapped out and themed at will for any partner.
This new way of work has brought engineering and design together, and has generated a lot of positive energy with our teams. It has also made shipping UI both scalable and more fun.
